Jimi Hendrix
I don't know if anybody else has picked up on this but recently there seems to be a big push on the North end of sheffield. Ie. First the building of the Retail Park which that has certainly been abit of a white elephant. Then the building of the Asda at Chauser and the redevelopment of the buildings at the bottom of Herries Road Screwfix etc. Now the building of Sainsburys, its as though Sheffield City Council have a drive to try and lift that end of the City but how much have they made £££££ out of it????? Why would the council make money out of it - apart from the additional business rates? The income from the sale of Chaucer playing fields to Asda was spent on improvements to the school. All the other developments were private sector money on private sector sites AFAIK.

metalman
Which retail park is the white elephant? Kilner Way presumably, though in my view that's largely been down to the glacial pace at which it's been constructed - a team of trained ants could have done it quicker. bungleboy69
build what they want lidle and aldi much cheaper It's surely not all price driven, Aldi and Lidl are great at what they do, but the product range is quite small and not everything is the best quality. IMO, as the economy improves and people have a bit more money, they will start to go back to the more traditional supermarket shopping experiences such as Morrisons and Asda for better choice and quality. That's what I'm thinking - how long has metal structure for the bottom building been there - getting on for 10 years?

Very true, there are some things you just can't get at Lidl or Aldi. Up in Stocksbridge, if we want branded teabags or certain brands of washing detergent then we have to pay daft co-op prices. We've ventured down to the new Sainsbury's a few times now and we really like it. It works out a few quid more than our usual Morrison's or Asda shop but we're happy to pay extra just for the fact that it's quiet and has nice wide aisles. Morrisons looks like a cattle market in comparison. Just wish they'd built it in Stocksbridge instead of our failed Tesco!
