HOT LIPZ
Hi, Just wanted to know if anyone knows the name of the Church that used to be on Summerfield Street just off Cemetery Road. My Nan's Mum and Dad used to be the caretakers of the Church and I just wanted to find something out about it. I just don't know where to start. I've tried looking for a few old maps, But can't find anything. If anyone could help me it would be much appreciated. Thanks.
me-and-pippo
The maps that I have checked it is called 'Congregational Church' as it is on picturesheffield Not to be confused with St. Matthia's Church, that was half way down Summerfield Street. Plain Talker
It was quite a pretty church, wasn't it? ...and to think it was replaced by the Dormer factory, and now the Green's Health Club car park.
multiparvo1
Hi, Try Sheffield Archives, Shoreham Street. You can access Cemetery Road Congregational Church records there, Baptisms 1859-1895 and Marriages 1869-1897, so it is possible they may have the information you are looking for. me-and-pippo
A bit more. Cemetery Road Congregational Church is cruciform, and is a good specimen of Gothic architecture. It was opened in 1859, the funds having been obtained mainly through the instrumentality of the Rev. Brewin Grant, B.A., the Controversialist, now a minister of the Church of England. Mr. James, of London, was the architect, and the edifice cost about £4,350. It is still popularly known as " Brewin Grant's Church." Shefflich
Hi, Just wanted to know if anyone knows the name of the Church that used to be on Summerfield Street just off Cemetery Road. Suspect you've probably found out what you wanted by now, but if not, hope this helps. Although I no longer live in Sheffield, I attended CRB, as Cemetery road baptist is known in Baptist circles from arriving in Sheffield in 1966 to approx 1986. My wife attended there from being born. Don't know who the present caretaker is but back in the 80s it was Sheila Jennett. Sheila took over from her husband Malcolm when he sadly died unexpectedly a few years earlier. we think before them, and realy not sure of the dates now, was a Mr and Mrs Beatson. They had a son who was a bookbinder and he bound some music for my wife when she was a teenager. There is a possibility that there was another caretaker between the Beatsons and the Jennets, but we are unsure. My wife recalls an earlier caretaker from before the Beatsons but can't think of the name. The caretaker used to live in a little 'cottage' at the rear of the church on Napier street. This was eventually pulled down (full of dry rot) and the new caretakers house built around about the late 60s early 70s. Presume that it is still there. If you still need further info, I do have details of someone who was at CRB before me and is still there who would I'm sure be happy to help you. Let me know if you need more. Hi Sharrovian. Excellent! Do please pass on my wife's regards to your brother-in-law when you see him. Her name is Ray and her maiden name was Ward. She still has and uses the music he bound for her.
