Number Six
The Bishop of Croydon has thoughtfully written some prayers about the football World Cup for Christians to use. There are actually three prayers; one for people who like football, one for people who don't, and one for South Africa. The 'South Africa' one is: God of the nations, who has always called his people to be a blessing for the world, bless all who take part in the World Cup. Smile on South Africa in her hosting, on the nations represented in competition and on those who travel to join in the party. Amen. The 'for people who like football' one is: Lord of all the nations, who played the cosmos into being, guide, guard and protect all who work or play in the World Cup. May all find in this competition a source of celebration, an experience of common humanity and a growing attitude of generous sportsmanship to others. Amen. The 'people who don't like football' one is shorter: Lord, as all around are gripped with World Cup fever, bless us with understanding, strengthen us with patience and grant us the gift of sympathy if needed. Amen. I think this is an excellent opportunity to test the power of prayer. The Bishop of Croydon is using these prayers already, and has published them so I assume at least some other Christians will use them. This should ensure that no-one has any problem travelling to the World Cup, no-one working or playing in the World Cup will get injured, everyone will 'find the World Cup a source of celebration', even those who don't like it, who will never be upset if their usual programmes are replaced by football. Bloomdido
Is this a joke? Perhaps god was distracted listening to the Bishop of Croydon and he didn't notice the plane about to overshoot the runway in India.
Number Six
No, not at all. You can read about it here http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk/8700262.stm I think it's great that for the duration of the World Cup everyone is going to get along and be happy. Who could possibly object? And only a real cynic would wonder why God doesn't look after everyone all the time regardless.
mj.scuba
Well God did help Argentina once, he just put his hand down from the clouds and knocked it in.
