HeadingNorth
I trust most professionals to do what's required of their job; in the case of solicitors and estate agents, honesty and honourable behaviour are not always what is required. I bear that in mind. And as pointed out with the extreme example of Dr. Shipman, trust for a profession doesn't mean a blind belief that there are no bad apples in it. SiSiSi
Do you trust solicitors? Do you trust estate agents. Do you trust doctors? Do you trust bankers? Do you trust financial advisers? Do you trust teachers? Hmm.....if your like me you will not trust many of that lot! Why those professions in particular? Why not electricians, plumbers, cleaners etc...etc...? boyfriday
I trust doctors, it is in their interests to act in your (as a patient) interests. I wonder if our trust of doctors is because for most in the UK there isn't a direct financial relationship between them and their patients? HeadingNorth
Are they trades rather than professions? I'm never sure how 'profession' is defined. If it requires nothing more than membership of a professional body in order to practise, then would not gas workers qualify?
HeadingNorth
I wonder if our trust of doctors is because for most in the UK there isn't a direct financial relationship between them and their patients? I've heard it said that doctors were more trusted when they had to be paid; but that is only hearsay, I have no evidence of it. It's a long time since that was the case, of course. Not many still alive who can remember it being that way around.
SiSiSi
Isn't a profession a job of work for which someone gets paid, as opposed to a vocation? I can't be bothered to get the dictionary out but I'm sure that someone will. OP still hasn't said why he/she chose those workers as being likely to be mistrusted.
