purdyamos
ive emaild both groups. his old regiment was disbanded, i found the grave on friday give me a chance. i wanted to add a poll hence new thread. what are you willing to do? vote maybe? What am I willing to do? Is the best part of a decade working hard as a volunteer for a cemetery good enough? Raising funds and manpower for even basic maintenance and upkeep of the old cemeteries is very hard, and with the economic reality now, there are going to be even fewer funds for sites like this. It is sad to see the graves of great and interesting people neglected, but it's something that I can honestly say I've done my bit to help in real terms. Your concern is commendable and I wish you luck with your emails, but the truth is there are going to be tough times for the funding of services for the living, never mind those long dead. If I were totally honest I think the many soldiers coming back in the present day with horrific injuries and PTSD are in more immediate need of funds than someone who has been dead for 150 years. Those are the sorts of either/or choices that we have to face, unfortunately.

*bobcat*
I agree - it would be disrespectful to tidy up and keep this chaps grave in good order and not do so for the others in the same cemetery.Despite some people's misguided socialist ideals, the simple truth of life is that we are not all equal. Some people are better than others - better at what they do, and better in terms of their worth to us all. Scanning through the posts on this forum should remind us just how much better some people are than others. Some people achieve things in their short lifespans, and may add huge value to society - or great sacrifice, while others sponge off the taxpayer with no care or moral value but for their next social security payment. Should the burial site of your average wastrel chav be afforded the same dignity as that of Mother Theresa, Marie Curie, Johnson Beharry or Douglas Bader? I think not.
