How big is a potato?

This might sound like a daft question but how big is a potato?

 

The reason why I ask is because when I arrived home from lunch the local green grocer had dropped off a sack of them. It was far to heavy for me to move and so I opened it in order to move them a few at a time.

The bag holds 25 kgs and there are about 30-40 potatoes in the bag. Some are so big that I cannot actually hold them in my hand if I wanted to peel one.

I am not about to complain, but is there actually a size range like there is for other vegetables. These are bigger than swedes and some must weigh approaching 2kgs each, and we would get 5 or 6 meals out of the one potato.

You should have asked him to deliver you a 25 kilo bag of the smaller ones, it'd have been lighter to carry, with the 'taters being smaller... ;)

There's no theoretical limit to how big a potato can grow, although I've never seen any that were much bigger than the ones you describe.

Where did you get them from? They sound fantastic. Jacket potatoes the bigger the better and hand cut thin chips about a foot long! And peeling one big one is a lot easier than peeling lots of little ones.

Huge potatos are more likely to be brown in the middle though which is annoying when you cook them as jackets!
