stewpot54
We had a blackbird nesting in a well protected spot and there were 5 eggs. Looked in this morning the birds have flown and the eggs have gone!! The nest is still intact no sign of broken shells or having been 'got at' Anyone any ideas/there is no way the eggs have been taken by man or beast. It.s driving me mad .Any clues welcome. taxman
That's nature though, dog eat dog, so to speak. Too true, it would only be feeding it's only little chicks. Of course a magpie is only one possibility. Squirrels will also nab eggs as will foxes.

If there is no sign of any shells etc then it could very well be foxes for they will carry the eggs away whole to feed their cubs, only breaking the shells when they get back to the den making sure that the cubs get all the food. Hopefully the birds will find a safer spot and rear another brood which they have plenty of time to do.
