Twiglet
Try and make some notes about what they look like - size, colour, stripes and what have you. Then have a look here - http://www.nhm.ac.uk/nature-online/life/insects-spiders/identification-guides-and-keys/bumblebees/index.html That's just for bumblebees. You can post a photograph of one on the identification forum and someone will identify it for you . Linky: http://www.nhm.ac.uk/natureplus/community/identification/bug-forum Edited to add: It's a common misconception that any UK species of bee is protected. They are indeed in decline but currently have no legal protection. However, the number of poisons that can be used with bees is extremely limited and they are often misused, which can lead to prosecution.

sccsux
Don't ever try and disturb a Bees nest/hive on your own Especially by getting a stick and shoving it down the hole and utilising a "stirring motion" (like I did as a child).
