Advice on buying a used car

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I'm looking to sell my Ford KA very soon and buy a used car - I've been meaning to do it for a while and really want to get on with it now but the reason I've been stalling (ho ho, pardon the pun) on buying another car is because I am a typical woman who doesn't know a great deal about cars at all.

I'm not looking for anything fancy at all - I don't want to spend more than £3k (not sure if I'm limiting my options there but am optimistic I could get something reasonable for that price?!).

I just want a car that doesn't have anything above a 1.3-litre engine and is just reliable, really! I'm not afraid to have a car that some people would brand dull or girly, I just want it to be in good working order and preferably not an E-reg Escort or similar heap of junk! :hihi:

Anyone here in the know that would have any tips on suitable cars and where is good to look for used cars in Sheffield?

Thanks :)

Hi. Not sure what you would be using the car for? If it's just for pottering around local with odd A road use have you thought about something a bit different like a Suzuki Jimny? They are what you would call a soft roader...1.3 engine (reasonable road tax & emissions) selectable 4wd (normally 2wd, but select 4wd if you need it so good for bad weather / snow), reliable as Japanese, and the suspension is all beefed up so good for pot holed roads & speed bumps (as lets face it due to the council & governement cuts the roads are only going to get worse)

If you do much motorway driving i'd give one a miss but other than that they aren't a bad shout for a reliable, well priced car which is a bit different from the norm.

I'd try to get as new as possible with the VVT engine is supposed to be better, but if you look around you may just get one in budget with your £3K.

Cheers for that - I drove one of those v briefly in Greece last year, although it was pretty battered but then it was a rental car for the day and it did the job!

I only have a five-mile commute, each way, to work each day and I don’t use the car much in the evenings or at weekends, unless I am travelling to see friends in other cities on a weekend but that is only once in a while so motorway usage is minimal but of course I want a car that is up to that, should I need it to be.
