old tup
My brother in law worked there for quite some time,a lot of people on Sheffield Forum know him-Conrad Lorenz who is a prolific self taught artist!.He specialises in paintings of long lost buildings and pubs in Sheffield, the late Leslie Crowther purchased some of his work a few years ago!,he used to display his paintings at the entrance of Endcliffe Park at the top of Eccleshall Road!. norsman
Anybody remember Hardys Bakery, I think is was somewhere down in Gleadless. I do remember, I worked at heeley when I was an apprentice with the P.W.D. we were boarding up the houses until they were demolished, I was the lad, and I was sent down to bakery Wednesday and Friday for 6 breadcakes then at dinner I went to the old chip shop that would have been where heeley farm is now,old type frying range and cooked in dripping, then go back to annes road school boiler room, that was where we had our breaks and kept our tools. PS boy did we find loads of goodies in the old houses that people did not want, great days actually, think it was 1969/70 ? zakes
Anybody Remember. Yes I remember Hardy’s the bakers. The bakery was at the bottom of Gleadless Road. Hardy’s had a few shops, but not as many as Styans or Davy’s. They had shops on: Union Street West Street The Wicker – next to Holroyd’s chip shop on the left going towards the arches. They possibly had shops at Attercliffe and Darnall too, Baltic Bakery territory. Lol. (Baltic Bakery had magnificent Rockcakes). Baltic bakery had a shop on Orchard Street, off Leopold Street. When I used to work just off the Wicker for Wigfall’s (Walker Street), I often went to their (Hardy’s) shop for bacon and egg sarnies during my break. Dem breadcakes were fantastic, especially the oven-bottomed ones. I was told some years ago, if you went to the bakery in the afternoon and could prove you were unemployed they would give you any of their leftovers. I don’t know if the story is true, but if it is, then that is a real nice social gesture. BTW. I think Hardy’s transported their wares in sky-blue coloured transit vans. Oops, crumbs!
