Wildcat
The EU legislation, to include the weights on products said nothing of the sort. That didn't stop the Sunday Mail running the story on its front cover, nor coverage in the Telegraph, on the BBC, the Mirror, the Sun and Tory favourite blogger Iain Dale. The Daily Mail story has generated over 1,000 enraged comments. And Coalition politicians (surely they should know better or are they really that stupid) are now defending selling eggs by the dozen. It really shouldn't have needed the EU to come out and deny it, the story was obviously made up nonsense and yet so many news sources repeated this rubbish. http://tabloid-watch.blogspot.com/2010/06/shock-as-eu-says-you-can-still-buy-12.html We deserve better than this from our journalists..... and politicians
PC Brigade
It gets worse- the Mail has now run a follow up story claiming that the decision has been reversed following the 'backlash'! Even though it was never going to happen anyway!
Wildcat
Worth pointing out that the EU regulations that have got the media into such a frenzy of hysteria was actually intended to deregulate the administration of EU products: “The emphasis is on simplifying the regulatory process, thus reducing the administrative burden and improving the competitiveness of the European food industry” http://www.jcm.org.uk/blog/?p=2545 Compassion in World farming was even concerned about this deregulation: http://www.ciwf.org.uk/news/laying_hens/eu_egg_labelling_law_under_threat.aspx It just goes to show that we can't take media stories, even those on the BBC website at face value any more.
