Carwood Rd area Pitsmoor.

I knew Jack the butcher very well Dave, my wife worked with his sister in law before we moved there, I remember a bloke called Roger took over the barbers shop on the opposite corner to us whilst we lived there.

I had a motorbike and side car which I parked outside the house, as we lived opposite the paper shop and bus stop, someone complained, so I used to leave it on the hallcar carpark for 5 bob a week until I managed to get the big gate open into our yard and parked it inside the yard.

I remember Fred Knaggs and also a dentist near the old Coleseum pictures, his name was Ivor, it was so funny to see a dentist with the name I. Pullem.

In the first yard up on Carwood there was a very short guy, he married a girl who lived opposite me on the shirecliffe, so I had quite a shock when I saw them living there.

You probably knew Eric Hooley who lived on Petre St, between Canada St and Jamaica St, and maybe Harold Colley from Jamaica St, he is my wife's cousin, did you ever go to Ellesmere youth club ?

Here are some names of people who lived around the Carwood Terrace in your day, Sowter, Simmonite, Thompson.

Hi Skippy, Eric Hooley certainly rings a bell, he was in my classes at All Saints', and probably was at Burngreave. I can't picture him but definitely knew him. The other names don't ring a bell though.I think I've mentioned the Hutton family on Carwood Terrace whose daughter was a friend of my sister before moving to Nottingham. I also had a motorbike and sidecar early 60's, a Matchless 500 single. The Hallcar Tavern was begun as a pub by my mum's grandad I think it was, George Charles. He started by selling ale to the steelworkers from his front room. I took mum and her sister in during the early80's when they were quite elderly and they told the landlord the story.

Hi again Skippy, Went for a job myself at Gillat's just after passing my driving test. There were no vacancies but I think the manager's name was a Mr. Milliband, or Malliband or something like that. I lived there through the 60's, as I've said, so our paths must have crossed. The butcher who took over from Billy Limb was Jack (?) Adamson I think. Just to ramble on a bit more,Warriner's garage, end of Sedan St. and their radio/TV dept. managed by Bernard Wilson and their old petrol attendant, George Herbert.Littlewood's Tours of Spital Hill kept some of their coaches at Warriners',maroon and silver livery. Nearby on Ella Rd. were two old ladies who sold petrol from an ancient hand pump. There was a doctor near there called Leddy.Carr's confectioners near the church where all the kids went for 'Lingo Fizz' and root liqourice. Harry's barber's shop nearby (" What do you expect for a tanner?" was his retort when a school friend's mother complained!) Did you know of the mineral water Co. Rider Wilson's, Wades' repair garage, and going a little off track, Fred Knagg's photography and car spares shop near the Vestry Hall, a bread van going through Excell's chemist window opposite the library, the little petrol station by the library and Grocock's fruiterers nearby ? Anyone remember the poor chap who threw himself under a bus outside Ellesmere Rd.school, early 50's ? Pepsi Cola (launch?) when they had a plane writing the name in the sky? God, don't I go on?!
HI David just got back on the forum l know all that you mention in fact we lived up the archway to Bill Wade's garage it was my father who let him the garage about 1944 before he bought the property, we were big pals in those days, we had some real jaunts together before l got married ,we still were still pals for many years l had a joiners shop above his garage in those days . THEN IN 1953 il bought houses and a workshop at44 Sedan st and carried on as a joiner there till demolition of the property. My name is Fearnehough arfer mo Edited by Arfer Mo

My Grandma used to live on Sedan Street with my uncle. I used to visit her every Saturday with my Mum, brothers and sister in the 60s. I remember the corner shop opposite her house used to sell the most yummy banana lollies ever! They also used to sell strawberry ones but they weren't as good. I also remember the clothes shop on the corner of Sedan Street and Canada Street which used to be owned by the Misses Walker. They were very nice ladies who used to let my Mum put a little money by each week to buy clothes for us kids. They also used to give me a new handkerchief on my birthday. I remember the garage at the end of Sedan Street - it also used to sell paraffin. There was also a big house and my cousin and I used to play in the grounds surrounding it. I remember these visits with great affection and I always feel sad when I see old pictures of the houses that are no longer there.

The Hindmarch family were my Grandparents, Nicholson and Mary, along with my father Robert. They moved to Sheffield in the 30's from Gateshead in search of work, Nicholson worked for English Steel. They lived in the same yard as the Wilsons, a Jamaican family. I went to Firs Hill School with Joseph and Bernard during the late fifties to early sixties. Nicholson and Mary eventually returned to the northeast where they passed away some years ago. Dad, Robert, is alive and well and living in Thorpe Hesley with Mum, now both in their eighties.

Hi Hindy, Wow, I knew your dad Bob well, along with your grandparents who were lovely people. I lived across, the Calton family. Your gran always cut off the crusts on Nichol's bread (she called him Nichol, not Nicholson). I loved their accent and they were a very respectable couple and kind to us kids.Your gran had an attractive hair style if I recall; parted down the middle and braided around the back, a bit like you see German ladies. I was amazed when you said your dad was in his 80's, but I'm 65 now, time does fly. The Jamaican couple lived in the yard above your grandparents. The father had a Raleigh bike, the type with a metal chainguard and springs on the saddle. I admired it so much I bought one myself when I started work. Bernard and Joe were twins as you will know. Do ask your dad if he remembers us and pass on my regards.

I would like to contribute my memories of Carwood Road/Petre Street.

I lived there from approx 1947 to 1963. My Mother Mary Sissons had the hairdressers on Carwood Road No 102. The chip shop was the shop below, which shared our yard was run by Pheobe & Johnny Phipps, they had a son called Johnny, who was about my age (born 1945). I believe this was later taken over by a family called Weston. We moved across the road to No 87 sometime in the 50's We shared the yard with the Footit's,Atherton's, Shaw's.

I also remember the Hindmarsh's, Connealy's, Mansell's, Calton's, Mary Stubbs was a friend of my Mother. My cousin Agnes & Stan Warris lived in the bottom house, her son was called Neil Warris, she later took over the shop at the bottom of Carwood Road and Petre Street, before that I believe the shop was run by Mrs. Holmshaw. In the same yard as Billy Limb was Mrs. Lillis, Mr & Mrs Crossland and Mr & Mrs Ellis. Across the road on Petre Street was another butcher's called Fred Jubb, Yates's Newsagents, Pearson's fruit shop, and a cobbler's. At the bottom of Canada Street was shop run by Mr & Mrs. Rodgers, my Aunt Jessie Raynes lived on Canada Street opposite the house which was destroyed in the explosion. My Great Aunt Helen Nolan had a sweet shop, which she had in the front room of her house, this was on Petre Street going towards Smith's field on the other side of the road. I remember Mr. Liversey very well, his shop was on the other side of Carwood Road from my Mother's hairdressers shop. There was also a shop up Carwood Lane called the Rose Cottage, just below the Hallcar.

I can remember the trams running on Petre Street, you could stand at the bottom of Carwood Road and see them coming from almost as far as Grimesthope.

G'day Jule, We moved into the house where mr & mrs Ellis lived in 1965, the Wilson family [Joyce and Allan] lived at the otherside of the entry to us at that time also, all the others you mentioned were our neighbours, so I knew them all well.

I couldn't remember the names of the others until you mentioned them, I remember Neil getting married and taking over the family home when Agnes and Stan took over the shop, we used to go to a club with them off Burngreave Road sometimes, the rents in those houses were only 10 bob a week at the time, and we left to come to Oz in 1970.

Remember us to Neil if he's still around, I think one of his friends took over our house ?
