Longcol
If he hadn't have killed himself he would have been a dead man walking anyhow In what way? Our police don't tend to shoot and ask questions later. They had a hard job to do and did it well.

Yes seems they did it well, but he also shot one of their own, it means something to them.
Alex C.
Why is it whenever someone expresses surprise he did this and tries to get the root of what caused it, they are called a do-gooder? Surely a better understanding of why a very, very tiny amount of people commit murder could help in preventing it in the future. To try and understand something is not the same as excusing it. Longcol
Yes seems they did it well, but he also shot one of their own, it means something to them. They don't have a habit of killing prisoners who have shot police - otherwise Harry Roberts wouldn't have served over 40 years behind bars. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harry_Roberts_%28murderer%
Darth Vader
Do we know yet, why he had become a 'danger to the wider public', according to the police? It would seem he's been very close the public, including just before he was surrounded, when two couples were walking their dogs past him, but they didn't feel a threat. Aparently messages on his dictaphone found by the police said that if they carried on lying about him he may take it out on the public. It was an empty threat that went some way in working. The police were not mentioned.......other people have access to fire arms, obviously.

As ever, the police would have been on a hiding-to-nothing, in a situation like this. Whichever way this sad tale played out, the police would be castigated. Had they shot him, they'd have been "Brutes and executioners" Had they got him to surrender, they'd have been vilified for not having "taken him out". I don't know that the police could have done any more in this situation, as they tried, and tried to negotiate with him, despite his earlier declaration that he would not allow himself to be taken alive. IMO it's to be thankful that this awful tale ended without any more loss of life than it did.
JFKvsNixon
Yes seems they did it well, but he also shot one of their own, it means something to them. Here in the UK the Independent Police Complaints Commission has to investigate when someone has dies following contact with the police, so it's unlikely that an accident would have been arranged.
