boyfriday
in the good old days , the suspect would have had a nasty accident by way of slipping in his cell. They were good old days?
alchresearch
According to ITN News at Ten tonight, the two tasers that were used on Raoul Moat had not been given home office approval (but the officers have not been suspended) and are controversial weapons to use, as they are far more powerful than the standard taser. But more importantly: The XREP Tasers used are still undergoing tests however the government has said forces have discretion to use any equipment they deem necessary Source: BBC
DeathAxe
They should have shot him with a real gun, not a taser.

willman
As ever, the police would have been on a hiding-to-nothing, in a situation like this. Whichever way this sad tale played out, the police would be castigated. Had they shot him, they'd have been "Brutes and executioners" Had they got him to surrender, they'd have been vilified for not having "taken him out". I don't know that the police could have done any more in this situation, as they tried, and tried to negotiate with him, despite his earlier declaration that he would not allow himself to be taken alive. IMO it's to be thankful that this awful tale ended without any more loss of life than it did. ditto. And its saved us a fortune in upkeep for him. It's not as though this was mistaken identity. The 28k fans probably consist of thieves, muggers, burglars or anyone who's has/had a beef with the police.
