Occam'sRazor
Did we have a say in what the Labour government did with this situation [bank bailouts] or did they do it without asking us...? They did it without asking us, unfortunately. If they had put it to a referendum, I wonder what the outcome would have been... We are in a sorry state of affairs when we think we have democracy (literally, "people power") when all we vote on is a government every five years. Once they're in power, we have nothing but writing to our MPs and protesting. Protesting, which is banned outside parliament and, of course, is often ignored. The largest protest we've ever had was against invading Iraq. Over a million people showed that they didn't want to invade a(nother) country that had never attacked us nor threatened to attack us. Over a million people marching in protest, and ignored. The people were against it, the government were for it, and so it was done. Just like the bailouts.
