The Grey Squirrel is now the dominant species of Squirrel in the British Isles.

This is the fault of human intervention, not the Squirrels.

 

If there were to be a mass extermination of Grey Squirrels on this island, the popullation of indiginous Red Squirrels is too far gone to make a recovery.

That is simply not the case it is true that in england the red squirrel is all but gone though you do see the odd one now and again even down here in bucks. a mass extermination of the grey squirrel would most certainly cause the red squirrel to return to the majority of the country but it is easy to say and very hard to put into practice.

My dogs catch one on the ground from time to time - always despatched quite quickly.

If in doubt about how to deal with a squirrell thats been trapped, why not take it to your nearest courthouse and shove it through the letterbox, they can then decide a lawful way of dispatch.
