Wedding dress cleaning

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I bought my dress in the sale, got an excellent bargain but obviously I have had to arrange my own alternations and it could do with a clean before our big day.

Can anyone suggest anywhere that cleans wedding dresseses and wont cost the earth please???

Thanks

Sarah

Hi Sarah,

When I looked after the wedding most places were charging £80+

Have you tried a regular dry cleaners to see if they could do it cheaper, I guess it depends on the dress style and material.

My step daughter got a 2nd wedding dress for the evening (less frilly and fussy and easier to dance in LOL) and got a shop soiled dress.

We did the calls and found the cheapest dry cleaners to be £65.00 for a wedding dress!

So, I took the bull by the horns, and the advice of someone who used to work in a dry cleaners and washed it in the machine.

I used some stain remover first and rubbed it well in, then put the dress into a duvet and fastened/tied it closed. Then just did a hand wash. Came out 99% clean, the only stubborn stains were on the underneath of the train where it dragged on the floor, but nothing to worry about. then just hung it to dry from the shower rail.

I have to say I wouldn't hesitate to do it again.

Most dresses today can be given a gentle wash with warm water and detergent. As a previous poster suggested treat the stubborn stains around the hem then either gentle machine wash or hand wash in the bathtub. I would then put it in the machine for a spin and just hang in a warm room to dry.

The bridal shops will use this method for their 'specialist cleaning' and think nothing of charging you £80.

Don't try it on the ones that have claret (red) or other coloured trims though as the colour has been known to run.
