Maybride
Hi everyone, I am getting married next May, and while I am really excited about the day (and the marriage of course!), I am a bit scared about feeling enormous as I am about a size 20 and never normally wear a dress. I would like to do the traditional white dress thing, but I don't know if I will feel comfortable. It was hard enough being a bridesmaid! At the moment I am just putting off trying on dresses, which I need to get over as the wedding is in just over 6 months! I am trying to lose weight but not very successfully so far. I would love to hear any words of wisdom or advice from anyone in a similar situation! Are there any large bride-friendly shops?
Purrball
I was really worried about trying on dresses for the same reason but really don't worry, wedding dresses pull you in at all the right places and you will look fab! I really dreaded it but I had so much fun trying on dresses in the end. There is La Bella Brides in Chapeltown, The Big Day in Castleford and Celebrations Bridal in Ossett who all specialise in larger sizes. There is also Elite Bridalwear in Doncaster, I've not been there myself though so I can't say how good they are but the first three are all really lovely and I felt very at ease. Just bite the bullet and go and you'll have a brilliant time trying on all the dresses! You really could do with going asap though as it will likely take that long for the dress to be ordered for you after you've found "the one". officegirl
I was a larger bride and got my dress hand made by Marisa 7 weeks before my big day as I couldn't find what I wanted in the shops. I had been to Debenhams and Meadowhell etc and tried on many posh frocks but couldn't find ''the one''. Don't be scared scared on trying on or designing your own. Why not pop in and have a chat with her if you have any idea's of what you want to wear. Her shop is located just after High Field Library sorry I don't have her new number. Strix
I went to a bridal fayre and found my dress maker - she does proper victorian corsets designed to hoik you in by a good couple of inches, and give you a firm flattering shape The photo's on her wall made me look like an angular stick insect - she'd never done a size ten before She was absolutely fantastic! I'd been given all kinds of strange looks from other dress designers when I said I wanted mine done in leather, but Linda loved the challenge of something different, and was even able to order me bespoke boots to match the dress... and hand alter them herself when they arrived in too tall for these legs attached to a 5' frame! dieselbabe
I am a going to be a larger bride ( if i dont loose weight in time). I to was worried but i dont want to were a dress has one i am not into dress and two i dint want to look stupid and fat. I was thinking just like you, But my friends bride is a larger lady and she wore a white wedding dress that even blew me away. I know she is a size 22 but you look at her pictures she looks lovely. I always thought in my head all brides had to be slim to have a white dress, i think most woman do loose weight like my sister did for her wedding, she drop from a size 18 to a 10, and to be honest yes she look nice but she looked so skinny, i did prefer my friends bride in her dress been a bit bigger. I know now it like presure to loose weight for a wedding and i know i am sure not goin to stress if i dont. It was not in Sheffield the wedding so i do not know who the dress was made by, but i found it so nice. So please dont stress about trying on a dress we all diffrent shapes enjoy ur dress trying on day, i could send you a photo of her to show her dress so you can see her style and see if you like it, i do have her persmission but not to post it on the forum. horsemad
Whatever you wear on your wedding day, you will want it to be special and you will want to feel special, my advice is start looking now, take your friends and family you can get it ordered and get it all ready for your big day..... i would have a look on websites or yellow pagestoo so you can find wedding shops near you that have big sizes in stock and in the shop..... good luck and enjoy your search for your lovely wedding dress. and have a lovely wedding
Sarah1985
I am trying to lose weight but not very successfully so far. I would suggest you dont start trying too loose weight before your wedding if your a pretty constant weight now. I used to work with a few people who made wedding dresses on the side. The number one thing to drive them mad was brides who either lost loads of weight after their measuring or who had lost the weight before the measure but fell off the diet wagon before their big day. They often had had to do major alterations at the last min and it serious compromised the finished look. They make the dresses to pull you in at all the right places to make you look your best. If your figure changes dramatically the dress will work against you rather then with you. And theres a limit to how much they can change the dress between the final measure and the big day. Besides your husband to be loves you just the way you are
