Moving to America -how feasible?

Recommended Posts

Me and my boyfriend are thinking of moving to america for a year next year, we visited boston on our hols this year and loved it. Has anyone here lived in America or moved there for work? How easy is it to do? ie getting working visas etc? We will both be qualified teachers when we go.

Thanks!x

Very difficult. You need a green card to work and there's a huge demand for them.

In order to get a green card you need to either have lots of money, and I'm talking many many thousands of pounds to help you buy a home and be settled comfortably OR you need to find an employer who is willing to hire you and sponsor you - again this is difficult if you aren't a specialist in one particular field and there are many others with the same skills as you over there already. I've got a friend who moved to the states but he has specific skills in film animation which isn't a regular skill over there.

You could be a performer and go over on a performer's visa - but you'd need to be famous for that.

A temporary green card is easier to get than a permanent one though, and with the intention to be there for a year clearly you wouldn't expect to buy a house. The American Embassy would probably be able to help more than Sheffield Forum though.

I've been looking at doing this (in either Boston or NY) and its currently very difficult. The economy there is much worse than it is here, apparently 46 states are on the edge of bankruptcy. The problem is finding work, most jobs have to be open to all Americans before an employer would consider a foreigner. I don't know what line of work you're in but in IT its not great at the minute.

On the other hand, Australia seems to have lots of jobs and not many people to fill them.

oh i didnt realise! we went on holiday to boston and new york and fell in love with boston (loved new york but not sure about living there). We would both be teachers and there seems to be loads of jobs in boston in teaching. Whether like you say they would be offered to immigrants after american citizens im not sure. The teaching salaries are also much higher so that is obviously very appealing too!.

Australia has never really appealed to me really, which sounds like a bit of a shame considering what you've just said about jobs. oh well! x

I've had a look at the US Embassy website - it's a minefield!

http://london.usembassy.gov/immigrant-visas/priority.html

Might be easier to ring them?

Until you start paying them the thousands of dollars they want to process your application the emabssy will be unhelpfull at best, even after you pay them they arn't exactly forthcoming with information, the official policy of the US it to deter as many people as possible from going there to live (unless they are millionaires)
