Social Studies School Trips

Texas

Recommended Posts

In my last year at school, Burngreave 1948, we had a period known as Social Studies. The big deal about this is that we got to go to different venues about every couple of weeks or so. The idea was to show us what to expect in a working environment when we eventually left school. We went to the Parkgate Iron and Steel Works, Telephone Exchange, Gas Company, Railway Workshops, a Colliery, a Silver smelters? This last one was at the junction of Neepsend Lane/Club Mill, I think they called it Dixons, opposite a bridge it was. We even went to the Britain Can Make It Exhibition. We were relatively well behaved,at least nobody fell down a pitshaft or fell in a blast furnace. Did any other schools do this kind of thing or was it just the enlightened attitude of our Headmaster, the illustrious Mr Scowcroft?
