Airplanes have no 13th aisle? Hospitals and hotels regularly have no number 13? Italians omit No 13 from their national lottery? If I see a lone magpie, I salute it' If I'm unlucky enough to see the new moon through glass, I turn three time widdershins and bow to her. I always say 'bless you' when people sneeze. And if I ever have to return indoors with seconds of exiting, I sit down and count to 13 before leaving again. I never put up an umbrella indoors and NEVER EVER put new shoes on the table! Most people claim to think that superstitions are poppycock but follow some of them anyway, on the principle that you can't lose. Not walking under a ladder will waste, at most, about one-quarter of a second by going round it instead; and, on the unlikely chance that the superstition is justified, it will save you a lot of bad luck. (Incidentally, not-walking-under-ladders is one superstition that's founded on solid good sense.
