The origins of Sheffield street names

Recommended Posts

hi does anyone know of why sheffield street names are called what they are and if they have changed.

ie

Pond Street - the ponds that powered a number of mills

Bank Street from the private bank at the end of the street

Sycamore Street - after the trees between Tudor Place and River Sheaf

Button Lane - Button making once flourished there

Fargate - means the Far Way

Black Lame Lane - now Broomhall Street

I think I have a copy somewhere, pretty sure it wasn't that expensive either. I'll check later.

There's a copy in Weston Park Museum for reference. In fact quite a few books about Sheffield available there for browsing.

IIRC the names of roads near where I live in Hillsborough: Wynyard; Dixon; Dorothy; Lennox; were named after members of (I think) the Dixon Family who owned much of the land in the area, and built many of the houses.
