Oh yes maybe partly but it does add fuel to the fire dont you think? quote from the article.Islamic scholars hope the clock’s influence will stretch far further than the sands of Saudi Arabia, as part of a plan for Mecca to eclipse the Greenwich Observatory as the “true centre of the earth”. article. HeadingNorth
The "true centre of the Earth" is three thousand-odd miles underground. Neither Greenwich nor Mecca have any hope of replacing it. Moreoever, as far as I know nobody in Greenwich, or related to the Observatory, has ever been daft enough to suggest that they should!

Oh lordy, I give it as much provenance as Bush & Blair's claims that Sadaam had weapons of mass destruction. This is a new commercial development, funded by the Saudi government..it's a big, brash shopping complex-'the world's second tallest tower', 'illuminated by 2 million LEDs', ...oh and it's going to replace Greenwich meantime....I don't think so, but doesn't it get publicity they couldn't pay for? Ps: note there are only 3 people quoted in the article proclaiming it as a viable alternative to GMT, and one of those is the hotel manager..the manager at the Grosvenor would claim they siphon Hendersons from a natural well in their cellars if he could get away with it!
