My first single goes a little further back. In the mid 50's-

'This Old House' by Rosemary Clooney This was a 78rpm, purchased at Cann's on Dixon Lane. My first L.P. was Buddy Holley, purchased just after he died. in '58, bought this one at Spooners on Langsett Ave.

I always thought that Spooner's was the shop next to the Boy's Club (bottom of Hammerton Rd) or am I getting it mixed up?

When I started work in 1957, my mom and dad and me used to put in 2 shillings each and take it in turns to choose a record each week.

I was working at C&A's so it was my job to nip down to the music shop on Dixon Lane (was it Canns?) in my lunch hour to buy it.

I bought my first singles records in 1960 to play on my Dansette (grey with red lid)...

Yes "Philip Cann, the music man" - used to be in Dixon Lane, then Chapel Walk - here's an old record sleeve:http://i169.photobucket.com/albums/u219/twigmore/Cann.jpg

Mine looks like that I don't know how much it cost then but I bought it for £5 from my brother went he was called up for national service. I bet my dad was none to pleased just when he thought he was going to get a bit of peace.

I think my first single was Charlie Brown but I know that I had a lot of Elvis and the Everly Brothers ones I also have a Cliff Richard EP but that was bought for me in 1962 by my then boyfriend who is now my hubby. The one that drove my dad mad was Elvis, one night with you I played it over and over.

I can remember going to Wilson Peck(?) on London Road and standing in a booth listening to Lord Rockinghams X1 playing 'hoots mon, theres a moose loose aboot this hoose!!!!!! They knew how to write'em in those days!!!!!!!!

Think the first record I bought was 'Are you lonesome tonight' by the KING, it always reduced me to tears.

You can't beat a bit of Elvis, I loved all the Everly, Drifters, Roy Orbison etc..

The daftest record I ever bought was "They're coming to take me away" by Napoleon X1V, that was daft enought but, the "B" side was the same thing but played backwards, what a rip off.

Another one of my favourites to irritate my father was "Let There be Drums" by Sandie Nelson turned up to full volume of course.
