Paul2412
What I can't understand is why the developers of the mosque are insisting on starting construction on the 10th anniversary of the attacks. Why?

Why? They're not, it's another fantasy created by their objectors to cause the maximum amount of hostility towards their fellow citizens.

Do you have a link for the actual construction date? Each newspaper or news channel seems to think the start date is September 11th 2011. There must have been some sort of reliable source. boyfriday
It appears hatred is contagious, and not just confined to Lower Manhattan. Plans for a mosque in Staten Island on the site of a vacant Catholic church, initially approved have been scuppered after locals objected and the Catholic trustees withdrew from negotiations. This is part of the account of the heated public meeting that took place: " But just 20 minutes earlier, as Bill Finnegan stood at the microphone, came the meeting’s single moment of hushed silence. Mr. Finnegan said he was a Marine lance corporal, home from Afghanistan, where he had worked as a mediator with warring tribes. After the sustained standing ovation that followed his introduction, he turned to the Muslims on the panel: “My question to you is, will you work to form a cohesive bond with the people of this community?” The men said yes. Then he turned to the crowd. “And will you work to form a cohesive bond with these people — your new neighbors?” The crowd erupted in boos. “No!” someone shouted. " ..hopefully this doesn't become typical behaviour amongst Americans. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/06/11/nyregion/11mosque.html

Clearly until they've got the money, no developer is going to start building or make any promises about start dates. This is a comment from Sharif El-Gamal, the CEO of Soho Properties and the developer of Park51, less than a month ago. "We have not yet launched our fundraising campaign. Park51 will incorporate as a non-profit and seek federal tax-exempt status. We are pledging to pursue this fundraising campaign in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations. We have hired legal counsel and top-notch auditors to oversee this process from start to finish. We will hire security consultants to assist us in the process of reviewing potential financiers and philanthropists as we begin to establish our fundraising strategy. We will refuse assistance, financial or otherwise, from any persons or institutions who are flagged by our security consultants or any government agencies. " The rest of the article makes very interesting reading and addresses most of the points of the objectors.
boyfriday
That will be a sight to behold. A load of Muslims dressed as Bikers, Builders, Red Indians, etc. Still it will be better than the Burka I suppose. ..they could always add the 'gay burka wearer' to bring the Village People up with the times
boyfriday
There was an article in the New York times that has since been removed, that stated the planned opening of the Super Mosque is to be Sept 11th 2011 Why do you think it was removed? Probably because it wasn't true, so why give it any credibility?

If it turns out to be false, I don't see a problem with the development personally.
