Pubs in Sheffield City Centre 1970's

Recommended Posts

Hi John

Me again! I have not heard of the first one but I have heard of the Bar Rio, because someone I work with used to go in there, and I can ask her about it if you want? I have heard a bit about it wasn't it the 80s? People used to wear Hawaiian shirts?!

asked hubby he say he was always in bar rio he words were 'many a good night'.

he say ' if you can remember bar rio that was a good fun night out can you remember the man in the car park that sold sergar burgers'

he also says can you remeber the songs around the old camp fire, i am W***** & they always ended the night with gloria & aint no moutain high enough.

unfortunalty he is 10 years older than me so i dont remember any of this.

bar rio is now a car park opposite the roe buck tavern.

he says the same owner had the barrow boys on barrow road.

he wants to bring back fun bars

The Merry England pub just below The Black Swan on Snig Hill.

Bar Rio on Charles Street.

Anyone remember these two pubs and use to go in them ?

IIRC, the pub that was Bar Rio was still called the Minerva in the 70's. I think that it was Bar Rio in the 80's and Yorkshire Grey in the 90's.

I was more a Blue Ball and Golden Ball drinker in the 70's.

Yes I remember it well,

leave the Blake Swan at chucking out time,

then into The Merry England for a dance about,

music (DJ style) was mostly Motown.

Brings back some happy memories.
