Asil Nadir Returns

Recommended Posts

Shouldn't Asil Nadir have been arrested upon landing back on British soil, rather than processed ON the aircraft, and then taken to his house in Mayfair in his limousine?

All seems a bit suspect to me :suspect:

OK, the reports say that his return to Britain is of his own volition, but surely the warrant for his arrest previously issued still stands?

His limo trip also has a Police escort...

We don't have an extrdition treaty with the country he fled too. He has returned but negotiated that he not be held on remand. He will effectively be under house arrest as he will be tagged and is on a bail bond of £250,000.

While I don't agree that people should be able to negotiate their bail conditions; What can we do?

We either allow him to negotiate his bail return to the UK and stand trial or for him never to return and never face trial.

Stuck between a rock and a hard place.

To me, this is another example of where our broken system is more broken...

Strange how it's all unfolding - he returns 'delighted' to 'correct an injustice', of his own choice. He does a deal with the serious fraud office to secure his freedom until the trial (which in some estimates will be 2012).

Would this happen for anyone else accused of embezzling £34m.

It's not outside the realms of my belief, that it is more likely that he has done another deal with the Tory party. Seems about the same length of time since the last Tory government.

Suspect, just :suspect:

I am a bit suspicious of his motives after all this time. I do wonder, 1. does he have money available to pay his way, or will he apply [and get] legal aid? and 2. what health problems does he have that we will be expected to sort out for him? call me nasty and suspicious minded--I dont care.

Regarding the arrest warrant, apparently it was not valid therefore it would have been unlawful to arrest him. I believe that decision was made at the high court. With regards to his treatment and why he chose to come back, it all smells a bit fishy to me.

I would prefer that he had stood trial at the time, and held to account for the charges, rather than being allowed the time to abscond in his private jet to France, before going on to Cyprus.

I do wonder what his motives are for returning, having such an idyllic lifestyle in Cyprus for the past 17 years, Nadir has said he was eager to see justice done, if that were the case, then 17 years to prepare his case, he must believe it is pretty watertight.

Perhaps though, given the amount of time that has elapsed, memories of original witnesses have dimmed, or perhaps some have since died ...

I can see this going as far as no trial being held, when the estimate of trial date gets closer, due to a lack of evidence/witnesses, and Nadir will be aquitted on the charges.

I think it is uncanny how he disappears at the end of the last Tory government, and appears again at the beginning of the new, given that he made substantial donations to the Tory party - it's not a giant leap to summise that he may have the new government on his payroll.

Just my opinion.

That would, indeed, be uncanny if only it were true. He fled in 1993, four years before the end of the last Tory government - if he'd had the Tory party in his payroll as you seem to suggest, he could have engineered a not-guilty verdict at the time, instead of waiting until now to do it.
