goatgenetics
built in 1928....you can see pictures of it on picture sheffield...berni inn from 1966 to 1990 then a beefeater restaurant.....no ghost in there that i ever saw.....but at the berni inn,old number 12,by the castle market...that was the place to find spooky carrying on Glad to find this info. I was trying to remember when it opened as a Berni Inn. Knew it must have been late '60's or early '70's. Loved the olives & schooners of sherry. And great steaks. Moirahyde
According to the Sheffield History site, the Norton Hotel opened in 1932. In 1932 the Landlady was Mrs Ruth Jordan. 1933 and 1936 to 1939 Ernest Shingleton. 1942 to 1951 Frederick Arthur Brindley. ---------- Post added 19-06-2016 at 10:14 ---------- There is a large article in the Sheffield Daily Independent, Wednesday 15 May, 1929 re the opening of the Norton Hotel, complete with picture. Also advertisements by the various companies who helped build it. It was commisioned by Tennant Bros. There are also many articles advertising the dances in the ballroom hosted by Marjorie Fields. goatgenetics
Many thanks. It was one of our favourites as a Berni Inn in the late '60's. Although I do not live in Shefield now I still have friends who live nearby. I went to Abbey Lane Primary just down the road. Happy days. x
