The 'babyfather' phenomenon is largely due to the disenfranchisement of black men and the fact that men no longer need to marry a woman to have sex with her. That does not mean to say that there are not strong family ties elsewhere. Whilst Afro-Caribbean culture is generally patriarchal, the family unit tends to be matriarchal or matricentric.
