The horror of live TV

Recommended Posts

On a day that commemorates the 9/11 disaster we can all remember where we were when we first heard about it happening, the live news feeds brought the disaster into our offices and living rooms in muted technicolour.

Other shocking events that have stayed with me throughout my life include the Bradford stadium fire:

Then the murder by the IRA of the two army corporals in 1988, dragged from their car, beaten, stripped and murdered in broad daylight as army helicopters circled overhead. This was the first time I'd seen anything like this and it was incredibly sad and moving.

Then there was the Hillsborough disaster in 89, again shocking live pictures of a terrible human tragedy in our home town.

and lastly the Asian Tsunami of 2004 which we all remember

There are other disasters and acts of human atrocity that dont manage to prick our consciousness in the same way because I guess we're not experiencing the full range of emotion that we do when seeing it as it happens.

What do others think and do you have any observations on the above events or others I might have overlooked?

Apparently there was a slight time delay, but I remember the snooker being interrupted to watch the SAS finishing the Iranian Embassy Siege.

Forgot that one too Wildcat, but remember all teenage boys wanting to enlist shortly after!
