Lotusflower
I think, the late, great, Mo Mowlem was the prime mover there, even if Tony did treat her like the office lass. But obviously being the person he morphed into over the years, he took all the credit. In his early days, I really admired him, and I do believe he was sincere. But he was sucked into the world of power and privilege that is upper class USA, and was lost to us. I will say this, given the old Tony Blair, the Camerons and Cleggs of this world, would still be skulking licking their wounds. Not heaping this vile retribution upon us, for the mockery they received at the hands of Gordon Brown. Or...as these lines from an updated English folk song (Hard times of old England) puts it... ..."You took us for fools and you took us to war, but it got you the key to the White House back door...here boy, down boy, roll on the floor...with all that arse-kissing your lips must be sore...sing all the hard times of old England...in old Engerland very hard times." Smithster
What do you think if John Smith hadn't died? Then the Labour party would probably still be stuck in the 1970s.
alchresearch
The medal was for his work in the Middle East and Northern Ireland. IIRC the wonderful Mo Mowlam did most, if not all of the work in NI.

I disagree, smithster. It was such a shame that he died. Tory B Liar wouldn't have got a look in, (I'll tell you what:- *I* didn't vote for him in July 1994 - I mistrusted him and his intentions even then) and it's my opinion that NUlabor would not be afraid of the "S" word (*whispers* S-O-C-I-A-L-I-S-M!!) and they would not be implementing tory policies, John Smith was a man of principle and integrity. I think he would have made an excellent, and trustworthy prime minister. I don't think Smith would have been Bush's poodle. I think he had far to much common sense. She did pretty much all of the hard work only to be replaced at the last minute by Peter Mandelson so that he could take the credit himself.
