warday
Anyone remember the name of the nightclub on Bank Street during the 1970's around the time John Travolta of Saturday Night Fever was all the go ? Like to think I have a good memory for the names of old pubs and nightclubs but the name of this one escapes me. The only nightclub i can remember was between Hearts head & bank street was called BAILEY'S.
stpetre
The only nightclub i can remember was between Hearts head & bank street was called BAILEY'S. The original place on Bank Street- part of the building that housed the former A.B.C. cinema- was the 'Cavendish Club' which opened in early 1967 by the 'Bailey Organisation' who were from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, who later named it after the parent company (Bailey's) and 'Romeo and Juliet's' along the way. Interlaken
I met an older guy in there one night who was from the Noble Organisation of Gateshead and he said he owned Baileys and a slot machine business. People were full of it in those days! Looking online seems the Bailey Organisation was from Stockton some 40 miles south of Newcastle. I wonder if they were connected? I remember the go go dancers in cages and a Caribbean girl dancer called Dawn. When they put the new carpet down the smell from fags stubbed out on it was dreadful! Whoever owned it is not as important as that Sheffield grew up when the Cavendish opened. Other major Cities had nightclubs for years before the teetotal Sheffield City fathers on the licensing board would allow nightclubs in Sheffield to open. You had to go to a Chinese restaurant if you wanted to continue drinking after closing time, before 1967 in Sheffield ,or nip over to Manchester. You could get lucky outside the City if you were well in with a landlord for "after bird".

The 'Penny Farthing' (Eyre Street) opened in 1965 and the 'Heartbeat' (Queens Road) opened around 1966, both served alcohol till 2:am.
reg1
I remember when it was the Cavendish and my mother made the pink skimpy costumes for the gogo dancers. I used to go in on many a night when it was Baileys
