We are all doomed in 2013

Recommended Posts

A bit like when we entered the Year 2000 and all that overtime was paid out for nothing at the end of 1999 when everything was supposed to come crashing down and all systems were going to go into meltdown (or whatever computers do!!) - all a load of hype!!!

I wouldn't worry too much.

"It turns out that none of our models were totally correct," says Dean Pesnell of the Goddard Space Flight Center, NASA's lead representative on the panel. "The sun is behaving in an unexpected and very interesting way."

Solar flares, pah. Just wait untill the magnetic field reverses again. That will sort the gizmos out properly. :D

the reversing of the magnetic field probably wont affect anything except compasses

however, the possibility that during the reversal the protection that it provides against solar flares would be diminished might cause one or two problems

The overtime was paid out to people changing the systems to stop that from happening ... and they succeeded. Why are you begrudging them the payment?

I don't know why the Sun is screaming in hysterics that it could happen in 2013. It could happen next week, for all we really understand about the Solar energy processes. The odds are somewhat better for it happening in 2013 - say, two chances in a million instead of one chance in a million, something like that. Utterly trivial in any event.

Moreover, solar flares take several days to reach us, ample time for Governments to warn everyone that they should shut down all electrical equipment between the hours of 1pm and 5pm on Wednesday afternoon to prevent the circuits from frying.
