segasonic
I still don't understand the reason behind it When someone 'important' dies, such as royalty, it's traditional to fly flags at half-mast rather than at the top of the pole, as a mark of respect. Dunno how it ended up as a cat though.

mikeG
I seem to remember using the term 'Charlie's Dead' which I think meant that a girl's underskirt was showing. Haven't used or heard this term for well over 50 years.

jibbs1977
When you see someone with trousers that are too short I have always pointed and said "Cats died", this I got from my grandparents, parents and friends. I know it's a Sheffield term (as my west yorkshire buddies are not aware of it) but where did it come from? What is the relevance of too short trousers and the cat has died??? I'm currently working in Brummie Land so any help on this subject to shut them up would be very helpful!!!! Thanks guys!! Ive never heard of that saying and Ive lived in sheffield all my life. Haven't used or heard this term for well over 50 years.I've never heard the first one, afaik, but I remember this very well. And how embarrassing it was to be told that ... Probably not heard it for years because girls don't don't wear underskirts today?
