180 Quangos face axe

Recommended Posts

Reading some comments relating to this on another site, someone said that there was an Advisory Committee on Conscientious Objectors. Considering there's no conscription in this country, what do they do all day?

Quangos are a bit like gongs and knighthoods. Rewards for faithful service. Keep your nose clean, follow the party line and you'll be rewarded when you retire.

If status is important, a gong or a "K" will be sufficient. If you need a bit of extra cash in retirement, a couple of Quangos should do the trick nicely. Very little actual work is involved.

It's all part of the institutionalized corruption in the UK, so I'm not confident that Quangos will really be trimmed down in any meaningful way. They're too useful!

some quango's may be superfluous however some like the NHS, the Enviroment Agency etc are rather important. many do work which will still need to be done, and their functions may end up being repatriated to the departments which had them before the quango was created.

It wasn't really a quango and didn't employ anybody - just a committee that met very infrequently.

I suspect that a lot of the quangos being abolished are similar and that much of the talk is about "bonfire of the quangos" is rhetoric and savings won't add up to a huge amount.
