Aging_Face
If you can get the other half to stand it there are northern soul nights locally every weekend. Some of my favourites are: - Barnsley Catholic Club (Soul Cellar) 1st Saturday of month Lord Conyers (Conisborough) 3rd Friday of month Majestic Suite (Mexborough) 3rd Saturday of month Robin Hood (Brierley Crossroads) 4th Friday of month (I think!) All these venues are very friendly and although some of the music has changed & we're not as fit as we used to be they're well worth a visit
Bebop
Just been introduced to this site. I am ex pat Sheffield, living in the Smoke for last 20 years. I was heavily into northern soul as a teenager in the 70's. I loved the all niters at Samanthas (have still got the red cloth patch from them). They were great cos they didnt suffer from the Wigan/Blackpool feud between older, Motownesque sounds and newer funk and disco tinged stuff - you got it all at Samanthas. Some of my faves were/are - It Really Hurts Me, Girl by the Carstairs -( sends shivers down my spine), Landslide by Tony Clarke, My Sugar Baby by Connie Clark (lot of clarks!) Cochise by Paul Humphrey , Lady Lady Lady by Boogieman Orchestra (a real strange orchestrated one that sounds like Barry White, - I could go on all nite-oh, and not forgetting the awesome Linda Jones.Wot a voice. I have still got most of my vinyl, apart from some sold when I got into jazz-funk later on and of course I now regret selling them. I have also done a few dj stints here in London where Northern Soul is slower for some reason - I only play oldies and I like em fast. Does anyone remember that strange little record shop off the Moor called Violet May's. She was a fierce ancient old crone, and everyone was terrified of her! She also knew the value of all the northern singles!

Was always scared to go in her shop cos she hovered like a vulture. Just listening to Mary Fox show from last week apparentlt ASDA have some good cross over Northern on CD at less than a £5 might take a wander down and have a look. jilbo
As an add-on....Is there anyone around who used to go to Samanthas, Winter Gardens at Cleethorpes, Wigan, Stars & Stripes @ St Ives (Cambs), KayGeeBee @ Sheff plus other local venues for all-dayers on Sundays.... these were my haunts in the mid '70s. They were brilliant times & I wouldn't change them for all the tea in China! I also remember Violet Mays but there was another record shop, not as good, that stocked NS records. I think it was called "Revolution" on the Gallery near Castle Market...
gasman
Hi just read your memories about northern soul. I too went to the Samantha's all nighters back in the 70's had some brilliant times there also went to Blackpool Mecca Wigan casino,as well as the Palais at nottingham great times and made some great friends. scene is still going strong I bumped into an old mate and returned to the scene about 5 years ago, met up with all the old mates from years ago it was brilliant. You could try the Davy's soul night ( on Prince of Wales Road) but Ponds Forge is alot better , Go on make the effort you'll enjoy it
