Highfield & Greystones Special Schools

ROLLESTONE

Recommended Posts

Greystones School is on Greystones Road, I attended there 1956-60, when it was a secondary modern. I think it now has a 'special'section. A little boy I know who has hearing problems goes there, he is collected and taken each day by taxi. Not sure about Highfields school, not one I have heard of, but guess it will be be near London road area(?)

You are right, Hetty. Highfield Special School is on Sharrow Lane.

It sits between Mount Pleasant House and Sharrow Lane School. It's still there but is used as a youth centre these days.

Greystones was not so much a "Special" Schol, but it certainly had a "PHU", a Partially Hearing Unit, back in the seventies.

Many of the kids from Greystones Primary were later (from about 11/12 and up) schooled in the PHU at High Storrs, with some specialist classes held at Maud Maxfield, school for the deaf just up the road from High Storrs.

Highfield was for pupils who tended to have mild-ish Learning difficulties.(Or at least it was, almost forty or so years ago when I lived over the road from it.) A couple of the "remedial" pupils (as they were called at Sharrow Lane) went there whilst the rest of us went off to schools such as Abbeydale Grange or High Storrs.

Mr Aizelwood was head as you say (wrong spelling!) Miss Hornsey, and Roy Turley. I kept in contact with Roy and Jean Turley for a good while after \i left scholl, used to baby sit for them. Can't remember what he got an award for tho', it's all a long time ago. Did you know there is a book on Greystones School? I got mine from the paper shop at Ecclesall. Did you, by any chance go on the Swiss trip? Am rather surprised nobody has ever organised a reunion.

Concerning Roy Turley. he is currently living in Stalham, Norfolk. A thoroughly nice guy and a friend of my cousin and his wife.

Sad to report that his wife Jean, once Jean Rhodes is now in a care home.

I wasn't aware that he had been awarded the MBE and am wondering if there would be a reference on the web to folks who have gained that honour.

Roy told us the story that on his first day at Bramall Lane he was taken care of at the door by the late and very great Jimmy Hagan.

Anybody out there remember Roy ?
