It's a bit of a shock though seeing once pleasant places going down the drain. It is terrible but benefits from being close to london which pushes up its house prices. Has nothing to do with the qaulity of the houses or residents. I too went to Hastings a couple of years ago for the first time since 91 and it had deteriorated. I noticed hordes of Vicky Pollard/Wayne and Waynetta's all over the place.
