Current government debt interest payments are £42 billion pa (that is too much - we can't go on increasing it and we need to reduce it). Government spending is £690 billion pa. How many here spend less than 10% of their income / benefits on mortgage / rent / credit card bills? So why have massive cuts been made in the UK? In the end it's a moral choice. What kind of people do we want to be? Do we, as a rich country, want to spend a tiny proportion of our wealth on saving and improving lives in poor countries? If we'd kept spending at the current rate the debt level would have carried on increasing and have got totally out of control a few years down the line.
