Foreign Aid to cost each of us £2500 over 4 years

Recommended Posts

If they plugged all the holes in Africa with all of the corruption then we would not have to spend a tenth of what we do. Didn't the Live Aid lot spit the dummy out once because all the millions disappeared into corrupt pockets ?

If they want to help with poverty in Africa then we would have to more or less run the place.

The aid money's being removed from Russia, China and eastern Europe to Afghanistan:

Britain is to cut aid worth hundreds of millions of pounds to countries around the world to help pay for projects aimed at speeding the withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan, the Observer can reveal.

Detailed plans to boost aid funding to Afghanistan by 40% as part of a re-ordering of global priorities will be outlined tomorrow by the international development secretary, Andrew Mitchell.

Presumably bassman disapproves of getting our troops home?

Foreign aid from the UK is vital to millions of people

The critics would have us believe international aid is squandered on propping up corrupt regimes – don't listen to them.

In the end it's a moral choice. What kind of people do we want to be? Do we, as a rich country, want to spend a tiny proportion of our wealth on saving and improving lives in poor countries? There are enough good news stories about aid successes out there to prove that we can, if we want to, and the coalition's answer to that question this week was a definite yes.

Who should we listen to then because the people on the ground are the ones that are reporting this back and people are jumping on the info for their own ends I grant you but lets not pretend its not happening, its our money and we at least deserve the truth as to where its going. Are you saying it does not get into corrupt hands because Im sure it would be far easier to prove it was than you proving its not if that's where the discussion goes.

That is the point of my OP, we're broke, cutting bennefits to our own needy/vulnerable, so why are we giving foreign aid most of which is misapproppriated

Who said we're broke?

A lot of overseas aid is given as a softener so they will buy arms off British companies.

Westerners have made fortunes out of Africa. Yes their politicians exist in a culture of corruption. Our bankers dont? They can **** away billions and get bailed out. They may lose their house and livelihood but no one starves to death as a result over here.

If it came to feeding a Banker or an African, then I would be feeding the African.
