What is so bad about squatting when a building has stood empty for years?

Recommended Posts

the people who squatted in these hospital and university buildings last year were a 'social centre' (sheffieldsocialcentre.org.uk) so their reasons for squatting weren't because they were homeless/vulnerable but because, i gather, they use squatting as a form of activism and they wanted to draw attention to their ideas. for those who are sympathetic to people who squat because they NEED to, are you also sympathetic to those who squat in order to publicise their views on society?

as ive said before, some open the squats to the community as a base for gigs, arts, learning

is that also a good thing?

is that a good use for an otherwise empty and eventually rotting building?

are they not helping others?

to me its also morally good

Perhaps not yet... but it will definitely happen in today's sue & counter-sue culture!

maybe some might, some might not, we wont know till it ever happens will we? and its no different from every form of activity we do

in fact im not sure ive actually heard of many squatters "falling through rotten floorboards" either tbh

usually when you enter an old house your careful and check it all out before rampaging through

tch wouldnt work

AND

as ive said SOME squatters make the property better, never mind "agree to leave it as it was found"

I just caught up with this thread I'm lost to understand that if squatters sometimes 'make property' better, they must have money to do that surely? To improve a property by any notable significance, one needs tools & materials & also if specialised (such as electrics / double glazing / plumbing / central heating with certain things requiring building regs / certification by law) services of a skilled tradesman.

If people can afford to shell out for these things why can't they afford to pay rent?

Can you give examples of 'squatters making things better'.....such as doing what exactly?

come on we ALL do a spot of diy, im not talking about hiring skilled tradesmen and buying double glazing and stuff.

but its not unknown for "some" squatters to knuckle down and repair things like window frames, floorboards etc

in fact i just saw theres a very basic maintenence guide here from an aussie squatting group

So you are not really talking about repairs of any worth?

im not talking about making a £50.000 house into a £400.000 no

im talking about if a house needs repairing it gets done no matter how good or bad

but any repairs are better than leaving the house to rot

I wan't talking about worth in the monetry sense, but in doing a proper job. The squatters guide talks about repairing broken pipes (that may well have been turned off), with a bodged flexy hose & jubilee clip repair....... Now just imagine if that clip shot off, and they were unaware, & it leaked so badly it damaged the structure of the house! Who'd be liable in that case then?
