Guns 'easily available' in Sheffield Tarek Chaiboub was killed in a gang related feud Guns are easily available to young people "in the know" in Sheffield, according to a report into gangs.

The Youth Offending Service report was carried out in June in response to the 2008 murder of Tarek Chaiboub, 17, who was shot by gang members in Burngreave.

It warns there is a "misconception" that guns are difficult to obtain in Sheffield and states the problems must remain a high priority for agencies.

Police said they worked to keep the city safe but gangs would always exist.

The report states that since 2002, there have been nine gang related deaths in Sheffield, eight involving a gun.

Less than a year later in July 2008, Tarek Chaiboub was shot dead outside a barber's shop as part of a feud between members of the city's S3 gang.

The report's author Ronny Tucker, who works for the Youth Offending Service at Sheffield Council, said: "Young people who are in the know will be able to get weapons quite easily, easier than me or you.

Sheffield had the first 'flying squad' to get rid of the gangs in the 1920's - the gangs had spin off junior gangs too, and so kids here have always had the option of becoming violent thugs... If you are a gun totty numpty, it will probably be clear for all to see, and you will naturally seek out others of your kin...

It may well be that you can buy guns reasonably freely here - but let's face it, they'll only be selling to their own! It'd be really dumb to sell to people you don't know, as you could face being set up and raided...

This is funny. I've been lectured so many times by so many members about gun crimes and the foolishness of the right to own firearms in America and yet apparently Britain's stringent gun controls aint working

Drug importers often send guns to their distributors as a bonus. You can thank current drugs policy for the proliferation of guns.

I wont argue with that. Sheffield however is nothing compared to the Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez on the Texas border where drug related killings between gangs were in the hundrerds last year
