'Xian' - what's all that about then?

Recommended Posts

I don't like Xmas or Xian as abbreviations. Xmas I have more tolerance for as it's seen much more often, but both provide tiny stumbling blocks to clear reading and there's a tendency to mentally pronounce them exmas and exian. They don't aid the free flow of readable text.

I also find that Xian looks Chinese at first glance.

Xian seems to be used most by pagans and atheists who appear to be belittling the religion. I'm not religious myself, but I don't see any point in little snipes at peoples faith. If you want to criticise a faith then do it properly!

So I always use Christian and Christmas - how much extra effort does it take?

(Apparently "the X in Xmas is a substitute crucifix for Christ" )

Xmas is tinsel, cake, booze, fights in the pub and The Wizard Of Oz on telly.

Christmas is caring and sharing and celebrating the birth of Christ.

We did that at school.

Another militant atheist determined to disrupt the thread.

Can't you see you're showing yourself in a very poor light?

Forgive me for pointing this out, but this 'disruption' began when you made a post that was deliberately provocative and insulting towards atheists. Until then everyone was discussing the OP.

Perhaps you should look to your own words before criticising others.

Someone certainly seems oddly determined to disrupt this thread but it sure aint me.

I must confess I'm a little confused as to why do you keep on drawing attention to how much better atheists behave than Xians and Muslims by pointing out that saying things people don't like is pretty much as bad as 'new atheists' get. Given that you seem to hate atheists so much I'd have thought you wouldn't want to draw attention to how much nicer than theists we are.

It's the proliferation of text speak, lol.

X is an abbreviation for Christ, arising from the Greek term

Christos, which starts with a Greek Chi, written as X. This usage dates back

to the 1500s. Thus, the usage is not an attempt to "blot out" the name, or be

offensive. However, it is worthwhile to note that for some, even with the

historical basis, the term remains offensive.

And we should accept your plagiarised assertion that "the term remains offensive" why exactly?
