Smoking ban killed the boozers

Recommended Posts

Surly you can't blame bad managment on every pub/club/bingo hall shutting down, if the customers dwindle there has to be a reason and its not just the tightening of peoples purses, the smoking ban also had a massive effect.

Like i have said i find it too much of a coincidence how establishment after establishment closed down in such a short space of time after the ban was enforced.

No not on all of them closing but some of them yes. People can go outside to smoke if they want to so its not stopping them completely - if they wanna go then they can.

What im saying is though people used to go the boozer and enjoy a fag with there pint inside the pub not outside under a little hut.

That is one of the biggest reasons i stopped going out boozing because i was sick of going outside for a fag all the time.

Even non smokers used to comment on how it had spoilt the atmosphere inside a pub/club/bingo hall.

Also lets be fair it's almsot as though your being herded because you choose to smoke, why dont the govenrment stop selling fags if they want to control how we smoke them?

Too much coin in it thats why.

The trouble is, the british people will stand for anything! You see big burly blokes tramping outside in the cold for a smoke, doing as they're told...people need to make a stand and stop being sheep.

I work within the snooker and pool industry and since the smoking ban came in many many snooker clubs have closed or are struggling badly, especially those clubs that are upstairs. A game of snooker, a beer and a smoke go hand in hand, people don't want to be tramming downstairs, lighting up, having a smoke, coming back up, then carrying on with the game.

It's a matter of civil liberties, and it's sad that the working british man has taken it laying down, and no...i don't smoke, never have!

Well I am a non smoker and I think <REMOVED> coz I don't wanna breath it in. Maybe having certain pubs that are for smokers only are the answer? Would be intersting to see what happened.

How can smoking make a better atmosphere??....suppose that depends on what they were smoking though :hihi:

Well I am hearing now from many NON-SMOKERS that they wished the smoking ban had never happened!.. More and more are joining the smokers OUTSIDE to socialise. Apart from the weather elements, I have to say that I have met many people outside of the pub who I would have probably never had a conversation with inside! I do agree that consideration should be given to non smokers, but this could have been dealt with by way of separate areas, suitable extractors etc. Where are all these non smokers who didn't like going o pubs because of the smoke? They're certainly not filling the poubs - we will be lucky to have a pub to go to soon at the rate they are closing down.

I think that would be a great idea having smoking/non smoking pubs, at least it gives people the choice then.

Regarding the atmosphere i mean when your having to walk out of wherever you are every twenty minutes leaving who ever you are socialising with sat on there own waiting for you.

It's probably not helped pubs but I dont think it's the reason for their decline, that I'd attribute the changes in society we've seen over the past 20 years. We were still losing 27 pubs a week in 2007 before the smoking ban came in up from 8 in 2004 (Source:BBPA) so it cant all be down to the goverment's boldest move so far in trying to make smoking less socially acceptable.

What are the stats for places of this kind since the smoking ban came into play.

Smoking ban was introduced based on medical evidence to protect the public and more importantly the employees working on the premises. So discussions about non-smoking and smoking premises is a mute point.

Cinemas banned smoking years ago, they're as busy as they've always been.

Disagree. They will use the excuse that it was the smoking ban to hide bad management. People can't afford to go out drinking these days with how things are at the minute. Thats why the pubs and bingo halls have closed.

Drinking and Ents (like cinema attendance) tend to go up in times of austerity. However most people buy their drug of choice at the supermarket, because it's cheaper and the smokers among them can enjoy a cigarette with their yeast poo.
