Chris_Sleeps
Juggling is more dangerous than swimming with sharks. Completely meaningless. I saw Professor Nutt on BBC News this morning, and there is a little science behind what he says. It is far from a meaningless comparison. New Statesman [...] It ranks 20 drugs on 16 measures of harm to users and to wider society, such as mental and physical damage, addiction, crime, and costs to the economy and communities. He said that for physical damage then the harder drugs were obviously worst, but overall, as an effect on society, alcohol was more harmful. It's prevalence in our society can't be ignored. spindrift
Other drugs examined included: crystal meth (33), cocaine (27), tobacco (26), amphetamine/speed (23), cannabis (20), GHB (18), ketamine (15), methadone (13), ecstasy (9), anabolic steroids (9), LSD (7), buprenorphine (6) and magic mushrooms (5). The study was produced by Prof Nutt's Independent Scientific Committee on Drugs (ISCD), and published today in medical journal The Lancet. Its authors said: "Our findings lend support to previous work in the UK and the Netherlands, confirming that the present drug classification systems have little relation to the evidence of harm. "They also accord with the conclusions of previous expert reports that aggressively targeting alcohol harms is a valid and necessary public health strategy." bigbladerob
wasnt the criteria of the report all about the broader impacts though (public disorder and so on) and not about the harsh addiction that crystal meth can cause? Im not condoning social disorder but surely this report is a little out of context if it suggests that Heroin is better for you than a pint of Carlsberg? They should just educate people not to drink to excess but thats probably an arguement for another thread!

They should just educate people not to drink to excess but thats probably an arguement for another thread! The report isn't suggesting that Heroin is better for you than alcohol. It shows that heroin, crack cocaine, and metamfetamine are the most harmful drugs to individuals, whereas alcohol, heroin, and crack cocaine are the most harmful to others. Combining these scores shows that alcohol is the most harmful overall.

chem1st
Heroin is pretty darn safe. Smoke it till you pass out and you wake up. Drinking on the other hand, drink it till you pass out and there's a good chance you will OD and die. Obviously neither of the above are recommended. Both alcohol and heroin are drugs, both are recreational drugs, both are entirely legal, illegal and medicines in their own right, both cheap and both expensive. The system is clearly fooked up. Magilla
Banning alcohol would get my vote:thumbsup:. Indeed. Personally I don't agree but if other drugs are illegal because they have the same effect and results if abused, then alcohol clearly should also be an illegal drug.
