harvey19
Those jobs are currently done by council workers or volunteers (for charity shops). The council clean graffiti & tidy pensioners gardens. If a job is worth doing, it's worth paying somebody properly to do that job. 16 weeks benefits for 4 weeks work. espadrille
But as I have said time and time again there are many many jobs that need doing that simply dont get done in communities as there is either no one available or voluntary organisations struggle to do it themselves so this could help communities a lot. Cant see what all the fuss is about, but then when you have done voluntary work anyway, it isnt such a strange concept.
sharrowman
"16 weeks benefits for 4 weeks work. " this is a bogus analysis.

Well if you've seen the state of High Green Park for example, i'd beg to differ. Every inch covered from top to toe in Graffiti, i'm sure it's not the only park like it. Charities are always looking for extra help/volunteers. Also, so many messy and unkept gardens on Council estates. Maybe there's not enough people out there doing these jobs. There's always room for an extra pair of hands.
INTERVIEWER
The council employ litter pickers & street cleaners. If this scheme takes off they're in danger of losing their jobs to forced labour. The 'Work' Programme will create a pool of free manual labour workers, doing the exact same work as some public sector employees, and they will sometimes work shoulder to shoulder with them, as they have done overseas - but for a tiny fraction of their pay. There will be no sick leave, no holidays, no pension or other benefits. Trade Unions will not be permitted to organise on behalf of these workers. This is job creation on a huge scale, but jobs that don't pay a decent, living wage. It is a way to avoid the protection of the minimum wage, which the Tories and their Lib Dem puppets hate with a passion.

FGS it is a scheme to assist people who have been out of work long term to get in to work. Why do you twist everything to suit your own agenda. When a full time employee leaves they will be able to apply for the post and have relevant experience.

INTERVIEWER
If a job is worth doing, it's worth paying somebody properly to do that job. Not according to the Tories, and David Cameron's vision of the 'Big' society - where poor people work for no pay. The 'Work' programme will only pay benefits which are equivalent to less than £2 per hour for hard, manual work. That the Lib Dems support the economic exploitation of some of the poorest people in this society, by supporting this new workfare programme, is firm evidence that this bunch of shysters only care about power, and holding on to it at all costs.
