Free energy
"You have to earn respect" !!! I hear this a lot, Jeremy Kyle said it to someone today. If this is right does this mean that people who you don't know, or haven't known long enough for them to have "earned" your respect yet, deserve no respect from you?? Surely a basic level of respect is what we all should automatically have for each other, even for people we don't know; i for instance clear away my rubbish when I've finished my meal at McDonald's so that someone else wont find a messy table, because i think it would be disrespectful (to the next person, whoever that maybe) of me not to. I don't think respect has to be earned, we all have an automatic right to that... i would say that it is disrespect that is earned.
foxforcefive
I think it's more to do with (in the case of Jezza contestants) that some of them think they automatically deserve respect because they are the mother, father, local drug dealer, local hard nut. And yeah I agree, it's definitely disrespect that should be earned.
Agent Orange
Depends on your meaning of respect. There definitely should be a basic level of respect shown towards everyone in society however, some seem to believe they can act like a complete arse and still command respect i.e. chavs.
Boblet
Is being polite being respectful? I try to treat people as I would like them to treat me, and leave things as I would like to find them (including clearing up my mess after me) but I'm not sure that is showing respect as such

Respect shouldn't be earned, just taken away when not deserved. Maybe you can earn it back when you lose it though.
Bulgarian
People on the JK show generally equate respect with being scared of someone.
Joanl
I respect everyone but I can easily lose respect for someone if they act the wrong way. If I lose respect for them then thats it, I just don't want to know....end of.

As a little kid my nan always drilled into me that respect had to be earned, it should never be given freely to anyone who simply expects it... It helped me stand my ground even as a kid knowing that my family expected me to earn the respect of others, and in turn only respect those who had earned mine...
