Student protest, London 10 November

A doctor needs a degree in medicine BEFORE they can be a doctor.

A lawyer needs a degree in law BEFORE they can be a lawyer.

A student wanting to learn maths to the highest level needs a degree in maths.

Training to be an educator themselves?

Totally agree with you though, as I posted earlier, some positions require/will always require prior academic knowledge that can only be obtained from a degree.

A media arts specialist does not need a degree in media arts before they can work in that industry.

A sports worker does not need a degree in sports studies to get a job in the sports industry.

Quite simply some jobs are suited to people starting off at the bottom of the ladder and working their way up. That is the training scheme.

Leave Uni to the professionals and academics.

My point exactly, the system would work far better if it was set up that relevant positions/placements were obtained with an employer prior to beginning the degree (I suppose this would be an implementation of a wide-scale intern-ship system), which then lead to a full time paid job upon graduation with that employer.

People doing the required degree for the job they have already secured and industry/organisation can only benefit as they have an exact suitable graduate for their business/organisation and the 'noddy' degrees disappear.

Don't know why you're all moaning, I could've told you what was going to happen if the conservatives got in power. It won't be the last disturbance and not just from students either; wait until the economic cuts hit home. We're just going to have to get used to it.

I love how you specify 2 professions and then go to general industries for your comparison. There's no such job title as a 'media arts specialist' or 'sports worker' so they're not a valid comparison.

There are plenty of jobs that require degrees in the sports industry for instance, you're not going to get very far without a degree as a clinical/exercise/sport biomechanist, dietician, or psychologist are you? Never mind the number of academics that have a sport/exercise background and do research in those areas and others.

Surpisingly i know a NHS admin worker with a degree in Genetics and a Psych degree holder who does admin for an insurance company.

Waste of time and money imho.

So after all the claims by the goody two shoes peaceful protesters that the violence was down to anarchists, it turns out the person that did the worst thing on the day (threw a fire extinguisher off a high rise building towards the crowd below) IS a student at a Uni in Cambridge.
