Attercliffe - Do you remember Ambley Road?

Amberely Road Hmmm so it was, i had never heard of it before the map

i was only a little kid back then, bag a crisp and a glass of pop in the amberely while my parents had a swift half.

I've heard of Amberley Street which had a big pub on the corner called

Amberely, never heard of the road though...lol

 

Amberley Road was almost next to the salation pub there was a chippy on the corner that shared the same back yard as us cheers.

I do not know if the Salutation Inn is still there now. But it turned into a Gay Club at one time. Then there was the Gate Pub a little further down the road. Our house was next door to the then swap shop. Franks right on the corner of Whitworth Lane. Now our once front room is the corner of the Police Station. Remember Hilltop Dairy. Barry the owner at the time used to give us a lot of freebies. Next door to that was the dole office. There used to be massive lines waiting for their dosh. Not too many unemployed then and this small office looked after all attercliffe. Lots of good times down the cliffe. How times have changed. The Arab Coffee Bars on the corners ( Just about every corner had an Arab Cafe.

Hi my gran-mother lived on amberley rd .then she moved to berkley rd.the pub was on amberley st .it was amberley st . berkley st .steadfast st.braford st.rotherham st. heading towards town.opposite pub belmoor rd berkley rd.amberley rd.

i was born on steadfast st no 55 ,1930 do remember thorpes shop on

the corner of the next street used to sell coal it was loose

they lent you a barrow to take it in and you tipped it down the celler grate

them were the days

IAM SORRY I LEFT IN 1934 1 was only 4 move to firth park

my mother used to send me back to thorpes shop used to go with a pram for groceries

had to walk there down windmill lane and a cross the tip as it were in them days

I went to senior school and college with a friend who lived on Amberley st., his name was Alan Cox who died in his early thirties with stomach cancer.

He left a wife Ann and two daughters, he was a fun person.

Yes....I remember Amberley Road,I was born at No.24 and lived there from 1938-1957. It was better known as Powells Grocery shop , my parents business, which was on the corner of Amberley Road and Edward Road.

I have fond memories of many happy times down the cliffe!
