Now is the winter of our discontent

hmm is that why the rich/well off started using offshore tax havens because they were paying little taxes

Some companies squirrel away their money in tax havens now and some did then. It's not a recent thing by any stretch.

And how does that affect you on a day to day basis?

Have you got all day lol..

"Units having to shut temporarily or turn away expectant mothers as NHS has too few midwives amid baby boom"

http://www.theguardian.com/society/2013/nov/08/nhs-maternity-services-overstretched-watchdog

could be due to

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/9634127/One-in-four-British-babies-born-to-foreign-mothers.html

"The spike in the birth rate is biggest in London, where six in ten babies are now born to immigrants each year. "

It would be easier to list what has NOT been affected!

Read through this lot - looks like there was a shortage of midwives back in 1990s too if I read it properly.

I don't understand the question.

I was trying to paint a broad picture, I obviously didn't make that clear. 15 years ago some companies paid some tax on profits, some squirrelled it away in tax havens exactly the same as today.

Now if you can name some companies (big ones might be best) who used to pay tax on profits but now don't pay tax on profits that might be more helpful.

Overall corporation tax income (bar the years of the crash) have seen an upswing in the main since 2000 so somebody is paying. See the graph on page 10 http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/20121205055531/http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/statistics/ct-receipts/corporation-tax-statistics.pdf

I only got to the first sentence

Struggling to recruit.

Thats very different to turning mothers away due to being overloaded due to the sheer numbers demanding the service.

The guardian article didn't say how any were turned away and what happens to them - that would have been helpful.

Ok, so an unspecified number of pregnant women had to make unspecified other arrangements. That's not good. How did you cope?

Cost of Housing! That has changed massively in the last 15 years. What have successive done or not done to fix that?

if people/companies were paying so little in tax why were they now using tax havens? I have had a look at your link and to be honest ive got a headache:hihi: but through the parts ive looked at it seems to me its another scheme to help said companies again pay as little tax they can get away with

Hang on! Fuel prices are plummeting, the economy is on the up,unemployment is at an all time low, interest rates are down and pay is on the up.

What's not to like?

In the interests of balance, fuel is coming down from a very high level and whilst saving rates are painfully low, mortages are still around 5 -9%. Mine was in that bracket in the late 90s. Pay isn't on the up at all.

whats changed with the people of the uk in sticking it to the government. why are we letting them ride rough shod over us, in that they are letting big companies get away with everything from bankers bonuses/tax avoidance/zero contract hours. have we all lost the courage to stand up to them :suspect:

call it apathy
